Why choose Ramblin’ Fly Fishing?

At Ramblin’ Fly Fishing, we bring genuine enthusiasm to every day on the water. With over a decade of experience and a patient, easygoing approach, we create an environment that is both enjoyable and productive. Whether you're picking up a fly rod for the first time or looking to refine your skills, our goal is to help you learn, improve, and fully appreciate your time on the river. We believe great days on the water are about more than catching fish—they're about creating memorable experiences in remarkable places.

Where is Ramblin’ Fly Fishing located?

We are based in Ranchos de Taos, a historic community just south of Taos, New Mexico.

Where do you fish?

Most of our guided trips take place on the Rio Grande, from the Colorado state line south to Velarde. We also fish a variety of waters throughout Northern New Mexico, including the Red River, Rio Costilla, Rio Chama, high-mountain streams, alpine lakes, and other local fisheries.

What types of trips do we offer?

We offer both wade-fishing and float-fishing trips.

Trip Options:

  • Half-Day Wade Trip: 4 hours

  • Full-Day Wade Trip: 8 hours

  • Half-Day Float Trip: 4 hours

  • Evening Float Trip: 4 hours (available June–September)

  • Full-Day Float Trip: 8 hours

Trip lengths do not include travel time to and from the fishing location.

Do you provide gear?

Yes. We provide all necessary fly-fishing equipment, including:

  • Fly rods and reels

  • Flies and terminal tackle

  • Waders

  • Wading boots

If you have your own gear you'd like to use, you're welcome to bring it.

What should I bring for a day on the water?

We recommend bringing:

  • A reusable water bottle

  • Rain jacket

  • Sunglasses (polarized lenses are best)

  • Hat

  • Sunscreen

Dress in layers, as weather conditions can change quickly in Northern New Mexico. We also recommend avoiding cotton clothing and opting for synthetic or wool layers, which provide better insulation when wet.

How do I book a trip?

Booking is easy. Simply click the Book a Trip button on our website or call us at (575) 613-2723, and we'll help you choose the trip that's right for you.

What should I expect on a guided trip?

Every trip is tailored to your experience level and goals. Whether you're interested in learning the fundamentals, improving specific techniques, or simply enjoying a day on the water, we'll customize the experience to fit your needs.

Along the way, you'll gain insight into fly fishing techniques, local ecology, fish behavior, river dynamics, and the rich cultural history of Northern New Mexico's waterways.

How many anglers can fish with one guide?

We keep our trips small to maximize fishing opportunities and provide each angler with personalized instruction and attention. Float trips are limited to two anglers per guide, while wade trips are typically limited to three anglers per guide. In certain situations, we can accommodate groups of up to four anglers with advance planning. Our goal is to ensure every guest gets the most out of their time on the water.

When is the best time of year to fish?

Northern New Mexico offers excellent fishing opportunities year-round.

Thanks to our location at the base of the Southern Rocky Mountains, there's always fishable water available—from summer freestone rivers and alpine lakes to productive winter tailwaters. Each season offers unique conditions and opportunities, making any time of year a great time to fish.

Do I need prior fly fishing experience?

No. We guide anglers of all experience levels and customize each trip to meet your goals and abilities. Whether you're brand new to fly fishing or a seasoned angler, we'll make sure you get the most out of your time on the water.

What species do you target?

Our primary target species include:

  • Rainbow Trout

  • Brown Trout

  • Brook Trout

  • Rio Grande Cutthroat Trout

During the warmer months, we also enjoy pursuing:

  • Smallmouth Bass

  • Northern Pike

Do you offer custom or multi-day trips?

While we do not currently offer packaged multi-day trips, we are happy to help you plan a custom multi-day fishing experience. We can arrange multiple days on the water and provide recommendations on where to stay, where to fish, and how to make the most of your time in Northern New Mexico. Whether you're visiting for a long weekend or an extended fishing vacation, we're happy to help tailor an itinerary to your goals.

Do I need a fishing license?

Yes. All anglers are required to have a valid New Mexico fishing license.

Licenses can be purchased through the New Mexico Department of Game & Fish. Please ensure you have a digital or printed copy of your license available during your trip.

What happens if the weather is bad?

We fish in a wide range of weather and water conditions. In many cases, we can adjust our plans and fish a different river, creek, or section of water.

If conditions become unsafe due to weather, water levels, road closures, or other hazards, Ramblin' Fly Fishing will make the final decision regarding trip cancellations. In these situations, guests may choose to reschedule or receive a full refund.

Will I catch a fish?

While no guide service can guarantee fish, we can guarantee our commitment to putting you in the best possible position for success.

Our guides work hard to maximize opportunities through local knowledge, thoughtful instruction, and adapting to changing conditions throughout the day. Whether it's your first trout or your hundredth, we'll do everything we can to help make it happen.

Gratuities are always appreciated but never expected. If you feel your guide provided an exceptional experience, a tip of 15–20% of the trip total is customary.
